Kusal Bandara
I met you when I was in grade 10. I'll forever cherish how we became friends so quickly after getting together, how I rode your bike, and how we used to play cricket at your house. Also, when my mother heard the sad news, she recalled how you used to come to our house with me and take academic lessons from her. Even though we couldn't meet again after I left school, I never expected to hear from you after so many years. So, dear mate, I wish you an adventurous journey. My sincere sympathies to Shiranjeewa's uncle and family. May you achieve the utmost happiness of Nirvana, Brother.

Penning these words with a burdened heart for a 1st nephew (late) and his family: Mom, Dad, Brother, Aunt, Uncle, Cousins and his closest relatives who cared for him during his growing-up days... It was just like yesterday when we anticipated lil Shiranka's birth back in 1996 – the arrival of the 5th generation of Unantenne's: a 1st great-grandson, 1st grandson, 1st nephew, 1st grandnephew, 1st great- grandnephew – yet most of all the First Born of Kanchana and Shiranjeeva (young adult parents). I recall as a 15-year-old back then, how Aroshi akki (Shiranka's only maternal Aunt) narrated with laughter the entire episode when Kanchana akki's (Shiranka's mom) water bag broke, how she was shouting and how Shiranka's Maternal Grandmother (Kanthi nanda) and Aunt Aroshi were too excited to gather their thoughts. I remember how we were waiting outside the labour room for his arrival while Shiranka's Mom was taken to the labour room at the Suwa Sevana hospital for the delivery. (I do not recall if we were there when he was born or since the delivery was getting prolonged, if we left and came again after he was born)...yet we sure were excited to see him and his smiling mom in the hospital room after his birth. I recall how both Kanchana akki (Shiranka's Mom) & Shiranjeeva aiya (Shiranka's Dad), named him, their first- born after the first parts of their two names ShiranKa. Since during that time, Shiranka's Maternal Grandmother, Aunt and Mom (before her marriage to Shiranka's dad) lived close by – walking distance to our place in Kandy, I remembered how, as the parents: Kanchana and Shiranjiva travelled to Kegalle after their visits to their Grandmother & Aunt's Kandy home with little Shiranka in the nights, they'd always stop at our 355 place. One visit I vividly remember was when after their 2nd son Milinda was born, all of them were travelling back to Kegalle in the night as usual, they stopped at our place, I came running out to see Milinda as a baby, but instead my eyes were drawn to the little attractive, boy with sharp features with jet black hair and bright shiny eyes with long black eye lashes who was seated with his head in the middle of the two front seats between his parents: Shiranjeeva aiya who was seated on the driver's seat and the passenger seat where his mom, Kanchana akki was seated with the 2nd baby son,Milinda, on her lap. And when i said "Hi How are you Shiranka?", he as a toddler with a straight face and surprised tone, asked me "How do you know my name?". All of us laughed and Shiranjeeva aiya – his dad, said "this nandi was there when you were born" which was also echoed by his Mom Kanchana akki in Sinhalese. Days, Weeks, Years passed before the two little boys were 5 years of age, where both Shiranka and Milinda with their parents would drop in numerous times at 355 during their night travels to Kegalle from Kandy. With the passing years, all of us grew up and apart ... though we met Shiranka at family weddings and had a few chats here and there and online at times.... but the memories of this once upon a time beautiful baby boy Shiranka still lie very much a fresh... Penned with love and fond memories by Sureni Hearfelt Sympathies to Shiranka's Family: Kanchana, Shiranjiva, Aroshi, Ushan and the rest - On behalf of: Sureni & Diluni Nandas/Nangies, Sriyanthi aththammi/Nanda & Daya aththa/ Mama
