Although a few years have passed, I was one of the lucky BHP Steel employees who benefited from Alan's generosity of both time and spirit. His abundance of pragmatism and the ability to work and resolve any issues has inspired me throughout my career. I will be forever grateful to you Alan for your inspiration. The world is a poorer place without you. May you rest in peace. Greg Jones

Alan was a valued colleague of mine at BHP and Lysaghts. He was a generous mentor to younger technical staff and was ever ready with advice and guidance. Alan was a good friend who formed positive relationships with everyone. He was great company with plenty of anecdotes of fishing and outdoor adventures. Whilst I haven't seen Alan for 25 years, I look back on our relationship with respect and affection. David Molan

I have had the pleasure of knowing Alan for a short time, he has been my neighbour for the last 5 years at Taylor's Hill Village. Yes he was a very kind, considerate person who always asked if I wanted anything down the shop. Yes he had many "long" stories to tell about BHP, fishing and all of his and Joan's travels. Yes he will be missed by many. My thoughts goes out to David and the Buchanan family at this a time of loss. Hayden

I have had the pleasure to have known Alan for over 40+ years, through work with BHP / Bluescope Steel. In that time I came to know some-one from the 'old school', a man of friendship and care for others. Plus he was a very good at his work dispensing his knowledge to anyone that sought him out for advice. I remember his stories of duck shooting and trout fishing, sometimes in conditions that only the true shooter/ fisherman would put up with. He was a great friend to me and later on to my wife Karyn and he will be missed greatly. But I will always remember his opening line on his mobile - "Hello, this is Alan Buchanan". Rest in peace our friend. Tony and Karyn - Brisbane

We met Alan on our trip to Australia. He and Joan kindly put us up in their home.  Alan was a lovely man to be around with a great sense of humour.  I enjoyed our walks with Ellie when you took the chance to have a sneaky cigarette.  Thinking Joan would never know (I'm sure she did) I will never forget you pointing out my first koala, a big thing for a lad from central London.  You also introduced me to Victoria Bitter; they were some fun nights. You will be sadly missed, but we are all the better for knowing you. Rob and Yvonne.

First met Alan back in 1982 when he was president of the Essendon Fish Protection Society and Angling Club. He would be remembered by many who spent many an hour fishing with him and his years of knowledge being shares at the weekly Monday night meetings over the years. Rest in Peace my friend.

My dear Uncle 'Beg your pardon' I'll miss your phone calls and our chats and the antics you'd get up to, most of all I'll miss hearing your laugh. Fly high, I hope there's plenty of fishing in heaven. Love always, Jess, Daniel, Siobhan and Ava xo

Knowing Alan for some 30 years has been a pleasure. You were a kind, gentle and very intellectual person, a wonderful Husband, Father and friend. Thank you for the rabbit skinning lesson which I could have lived without. Goodbye old Mate. You will be deeply missed. Our heart goes out to the Buchanen family at this a time of profound loss. From our hearts to yours. Phil & Peter.
